Battery preconditioning prepares the high-voltage battery to the optimal temperature for DC fast charging in BMW vehicles with BMW Operating System 8 and newer. Its main purpose is to improve charging performance and reduce charging time at DC charging stations.
Importance of battery preconditioning
- Faster DC charging: A battery at the optimal temperature can accept higher charging power, which shortens DC charging time.
- Stable charging performance: Battery preconditioning helps ensure consistent charging behavior by reducing the likelihood of arriving at a DC charging station with a cold battery.
Note: The exact optimal battery temperature varies depending on vehicle, battery, and charging conditions.
It is important to clearly differentiate between battery preconditioning and cabin preconditioning.
Battery preconditioning
- Focus: Preparing the high-voltage battery for faster DC charging
- Benefit: Improved charging performance
- Context: DC charging only
Cabin (interior) preconditioning
- Focus: Passenger comfort
- Benefit: Comfortable interior temperature
- It can improve energy efficiency when performed while the vehicle is plugged in.
- Not related to charging performance
How does battery preconditioning work?
- When using BMW Maps with active route guidance to a DC charging station, battery preconditioning is automatically activated if required (unless disabled in the battery preconditioning menu). This ensures the battery reaches the optimal temperature in time for the upcoming charging process.
- If navigation with BMW Maps is not used, battery preconditioning can be activated manually via the Central Information Display before DC charging.
- Battery preconditioning can be conveniently started before departure via the My BMW App.
- For select BMW Operating System X electric vehicles, battery preconditioning can be activated via an individual departure plan.
- The current battery temperature status can be viewed in the vehicle status in the Central Information Display.
Summary: Battery preconditioning prepares the high-voltage battery to the optimal‑ temperature for DC fast charging, enabling higher charging performance and shorter charging times.
It is a charging specific function and should not be confused with cabin preconditioning, which is intended for passenger comfort and has no impact on charging performance.
