Understanding Multiple Keys in Your BMW
With the BMW Digital Key Plus becoming your primary vehicle key, it’s increasingly common to have multiple keys—digital or physical—inside the vehicle at the same time. This includes combinations like multiple smartphones, a smartwatch, or even traditional physical keys.
How “Lock When Walking Away” Works
When the “Lock when walking away” feature is activated, your BMW will automatically lock as soon as the first key leaves the vehicle’s detection zone—even if another key is still inside. This ensures your vehicle stays secure without needing to manually lock it.
- If you’re using a smartphone and a smartwatch with your Digital Key, you can leave your phone in the car and walk away with your watch—the car will still lock.
- If you carry two phones (work and personal), you can leave one in the car and still rely on the other to lock the vehicle automatically.
- The same applies when using multiple physical keys—if one person exits the car with a key, the vehicle will lock based on the active settings.
- Always keep your personal belongings safe when locking your vehicle, out of sight and securely stored is always a best practice.
Extra Convenience & Peace of Mind
You don’t even need to take your key out of your pocket. As long as “Lock when walking away” is enabled, your BMW handles it for you. You can also enable visual confirmation like:
- Blinking indicators
- Folding mirrors
And always check your vehicle’s lock status in the My BMW App.
