What is Air Recirculation Mode in my BMW with BMW Operating System 8 and newer?

You may react to unpleasant odors or pollutants in the immediate environment by temporarily suspending the supply of outside air. The system then recirculates the interior air. If there is window condensation, turn off the air recirculation. When the air recirculation is turned off, outside air is directed into the interior. In the automatic recirculated-air control, outside air is drawn in or the interior air is circulated, depending on the outside air quality. The interior filter cleans the incoming fresh air or the circulated interior air in recirculation mode. 

 

Depending on which BMW Operating System your vehicle has, perform the following steps.

 

BMW Operating System 8:

Turning air recirculation on/off:

  1. "CLIMATE MENU"
  2. The current operating mode is displayed in the toolbar. Select the desired setting in the toolbar:
    • ▷ "Air recirculation"
    • ▷ "Fresh air"
    • ▷ "Auto air recirculation" 

 

BMW Operating System 8.5 and 9

Turning air recirculation on/off:
Air recirculation mode can be switched on or off via iDrive:

  1. Tap the fan icon for the Climate menu on the menu bar.
  2. The current operating mode is displayed on the climate control functions bar.
  3. Tap the button until the desired operating mode is set.
