The BMW Group is among the leading providers of advanced driver assistance systems. BMW was the first car manufacturer in Germany to receive international approval for DCAS (Driver Control Assistance Systems). This is the foundation for advanced Level 2 assistance systems, such as Highway & Commuting Assistant. Highway & Commuting Assistant enables hands-off driving at up to 85 mph on approved highways, providing the driver continues to pay attention to the traffic and intervenes if necessary.
Level 2 assistance systems enable the vehicle to support the driver by taking over specific driving tasks, such as lane and distance control, while the driver retains full responsibility. This means that the driver has to continuously monitor the system and the traffic environment and be ready to intervene and/or steer the vehicle themselves at any time.
BMW Symbiotic Drive is not a self-driving system. Drivers still need to stay engaged and responsive with BMW Symbiotic Drive. However, it does form a more cohesive connection between the driver and the driver assistance features that helps create an easier more enjoyable driving experience.
