What is the difference between the BMW Digital Key and the BMW Digital Key Plus?

With BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key Plus a compatible smartphone acts as the vehicle’s key fob and main key. The owner has control over vehicle functions directly on their smartphone or smartwatch “Wallet” feature.  Below are the differences between BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key Plus.

 

HOW TO UNLOCK:

  • BMW Digital Key: Uses "near field communication" (NFC) mobile standard. Hold the compatible smart device to the door handle on the driver's side to lock and unlock. 
  • BMW Digital Key Plus: The vehicle automatically locks or unlocks when approaching or leaving the vehicle using the secure ultra-wideband technology (UWB). If the vehicle has been parked for some time, the user will have to touch the door handle to unlock the vehicle. 

HOW TO START THE CAR

  • BMW Digital Key: To start the engine, place the device in the wireless charging troy and push START/ STOP to start the engine. 
  • BMW Digital Key Plus: To start the engine, the driver must push START/ STOP.

SHARING KEYS

  • BMW Digital Key can be shared with up to 5 friends and family members. 
  • BMW Digital Key Plus can be shared with up to 18 friends and family members.
