The Back-up Assistant in your BMW with Operating System 8.5 supports you when reversing in tight or confusing parking or road situations. Your BMW stores the driving movements of the last distance covered. This stored distance can be driven in reverse with automated steering. When the system takes over steering, you must continue to control the speed yourself, without exceeding 6 mph, using the accelerator pedal and the brake.
Depending on the equipment of your 2024 BMW X1, the Back-up Assistant remembers the last 656 feet driven at a maximum speed of 22 mph including your steering movements and enables you to autonomously steer while reversing along the same route. To reverse, you must operate the accelerator pedal yourself. At a speed of approx. 6 mph, the steering intervention is deactivated by the Back-up Assistant and you have to take over the steering. The distance of the remaining route is shown in the image of the Rear View Camera on the BMW control display. The Back-up Assistant remembers the distance traveled even after locking and can still steer automatically when you continue the journey.
Perform the following to reverse with automated steering:

To reverse with automatic steering, switch on drive-ready state.

When your vehicle is stationary, press the Park Assist key on the center console or engage reverse gear. The parking assistance systems view is displayed.

Bring up the following menu via iDrive: "Start back-up Assistant". The length of the distance covered is displayed on the control display and in the instrument cluster.
If applicable, follow the instructions on the control display or in the instrument cluster

Take your hands off the steering wheel and carefully drive in reverse with the accelerator pedal and the brake. The status symbol for the Back-up Assistant illuminates green. The system takes over the steering.
When driving in reverse, observe the vehicle's surroundings.
In case of obstacles, stop immediately and take over control of the vehicle. Follow the instructions for Park Distance Control.
- Right before the end of the stored distance covered, a signal tone will sound and a message is displayed. Stop no later than when normal road traffic is reached and take control of the vehicle such as by shifting to forward gear.
Please note: The Back-up Assistant does not react to obstacles in the reversing area. You must monitor the rear and side areas of the vehicle yourself to avoid collisions with obstacles.
